Mako is awarded the Goldfarb Family Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction, at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
2015
Mako’s essay, “Tokyo Monsoon,” is named a Notable Essay by Best American Essays 2015.
2012
Mako receives the Thomas A. Wilhelmus Editors’ Award, from the Southern Indiana Review, for “Secrets of the Sun.”
Mako’s essay, “Secrets of the Sun,” receives the First Honorable Mention from the Dana Essay Awards.
2011
Mako is named runner-up for the Missouri Review Editors’ Prize in Nonfiction, for “My Father’s Women.”
Mako’s essay, “My Father’s Women,” was awarded the Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Award from the Salem College International Literary Awards program.
2010
Mako conducted a reading and discussion of her work at Loyola University in Chicago.
Mako was a guest writer at Wheaton College where she met with creative writing students and read from her novel in progress.
